Rau has directed in New York, Chicago and Montreal. He assisted Robert Woodruff at the San Francisco Opera, on the world premiere Philip Glass opera Appomatiox. His show The Games We Used To Play, which he co-created with Max Goldblatt, took first place at the Les Fetes Theatrales du Surolt in 2005 and his show The Ted Haggard Monologues won an Artistic Excellence award at the undergroundzero festival and will be remounted in January. He is a recipient of the Willard Fellowship and was a 2006 Kennedy Center Directing Fellow. He has also assisted Anne Bogart, John Turturro and Les Waters. Rau is a graduate of Wesleyan University with honors in both Theater and American studies and is an MFA Candidate in Directing at Columbia University's School of the Arts.
