Clifford Odets
At Writers Theatre: My Own Stranger
The son of Jewish immigrants, Clifford Odets was raised in the Bronx section of New York City. While his mother toiled in a factory and his father worked as a salt merchant, Clifford had dreams of escaping such drudgery and joining the professional theatre. His decision to leave school at 15 to pursue his art enraged his father, who promptly smashed Cliffor's typewriter to pieces. Defiantly, the younger Odets declared "You can't harness me to a truck - can' you see I'm not a truck horse?"
