WRITERS’ THEATRE LANDMARK PRODUCTION A MINISTER’S WIFE HEADS TO NEW YORK!
After receiving its world premiere at Writers’ Theatre, A Minister’s Wife is heading to New York’s Lincoln Center Theater and starts performances on April 7, 2011. Conceived and directed by Writers’ Theatre Artistic Director Michael Halberstam, the incredibly successful production has found a second staging at the New York institution. Halberstam is back at the helm directing and will be once again working with two original cast members, Kate Fry (Candida) and Liz Baltes (Prossy).
A Minister’s Wife was adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play Candida by Austin Pendleton, with music by Josh Schmidt and lyrics by Jan Tranen. Halberstam and his team of collaborators spent more than four years developing the production through Writers’ Literary Development Initiative. After several workshops and countless rewrites, A Ministers’ Wife ultimately graced the Tudor Stage with its world premiere in May of 2009.
A Minister’s Wife explores the fires burning beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary marriage. The Revered James Morell (to be played by veteran Broadway actor Marc Kudisch) and his wife, Candida (Kate Fry), are happily married – or at least they think – until a romantic young poet, Marchbanks, (Bobby Steggert) enters their life. The cast is rounded out with Drew Gehling playing Alexander Mill.
In the constant pursuit of bringing only the finest work to the stage, Halberstam and the rest of the creative team went back to work writing, rearranging and fine-tuning the musical for its New York debut. Since closing in Glencoe, A Minister’s Wife has gone through two workshops at Lincoln Center Theater. “We are immensely grateful that our dedication to the word and the artist has been received so enthusiastically by our colleagues around the nation and Lincoln Center is a superb home for A Minister’s Wife,” said Halberstam. “To be in collaboration with them is a great testament to the artistry and skill of the Writers’ Theatre creative team.”
If you missed A Minister’s Wife at Writers’ Theatre or you’d like to see what Halberstam and his creative team have been up to, performances will begin Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Mitzi Newhouse Theater (150 West 65 Street, New York).
